The Marin County Fair is scheduled for June 30-July 4, 2018 at the Marin County Fairgrounds. This year’s theme is All for One, Fun for All! Many people think the fair is only for children, and consists of only rides, carnival food, and fireworks at the end of the day. That is so not true of this fair! There are many activities to keep you busy; you may not even have time to ride the rides. First things first:
HOW TO GET THERE:
You can find parking outside the fair, take public transportation via Golden Gate Transit, Marin Transit, or take the SMART train to the fair. Click here for information. Bicycle valet parking is also available at the fair at the Main Gate. June 30, July 1, and July 4th from 11:00 a.m-11:00 p.m. July 2nd and 3rd from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
The fair opens daily at 11:00 am and closes at 11:00 p.m. Here is a map to help you find your way. Start your day in the Marin Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium to view arts and crafts, bonsai, and photography exhibits. Then walk across Main Street to see the gardens and flowers on display. Feeling hungry? The food court is just around the corner. You’ll find Italian, Mexican food, Greek gyros, roasted turkey; the variety is really amazing. After eating, peruse the vendors that have are selling hats, shirts, computer accessories, games, umbrellas, etc.
Next stop: Clover Sonoma Farm area. A favorite attraction is the sheepdog trials. This year they will be at the fair on Sunday at noon. The border collies come with their handlers and compete to corral the sheep and it is very fun to watch. If that’s not for you, be sure to make time to visit the Pig Races. The little pigs run around a small track and are awarded with Oreo cookies at the end. The crowd gets divided into 4 groups corresponding to the pig in each lane and they really shout loudly for “their pig.” There are other livestock shows and demonstration and of course, the petting zoo.
By this time, you may be pretty tired. Head to the area near the lake where the evening show will take place later in the day. Stake out a spot, and lay down a blanket and rest for a while. Many people get there early and claim their spots and everyone is very respectful to not walk over other group’s blankets.
The evening concerts are very popular and the organizers have once again booked artists that are sure to please. Check out the schedule!
There still may be enough time to squeeze in some rides in the carnival area, or take a leisurely ride on the ferris wheel. Stay for the fireworks at 9:30 pm and then head home. All for one and fun for all!
