Water Sports in Marin

From stand-up paddleboarding to surfing, from Muir Woods to the California Coast, living in Marin offers so many ways to enjoy your leisure time in our beautiful natural environment. The Marin lifestyle is a real factor for people looking to buy a home in the Bay Area, and as summer rolls around, it’s always good to think of ways to make the most of our access to the ocean and more.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn to surf, the beach at Bolinas is known for the kind of smaller, slower waves that suit beginners. Local surf school Surf Bolinas offers lessons on “the best beginner waves” at “the Bay Area’s safest beginner beach.”

One of the best things about being a Marin resident is being able to avoid the weekend crowds sometimes, and enjoy outdoor recreation on your own schedule. You can even send your kids to summer surf camp at Surf Bolinas, which is an enviable way to learn a skill over the summer.

Stinson Beach is another popular surfing destination, with its own local surf school offering Stinson Beach Surf Camp. Local instructor Glenn Whitaker offers lessons at both Stinson and Bolinas via Marin Surf Camp.

Prefer to enjoy the water resort style? The Club at Harbor Point in Mill Valley might be more your style, with one of Marin’s best year-round swim facilities, alongside tennis courts and a fitness club.

If your family’s not quite ready to surf our local beaches, but you’re looking for something a little more adventurous than a resort experience, my personal recommendation is stand-up paddle boarding (SUP for short). SUP can be a great activity with the kids, especially on a warm summer day. You rarely have to travel far in Marin for a new adventure, and all it took was a trip to 101 Surf Sports in San Rafael to kit us out for a wonderful activity on the water.

The 101 Surf crew are very helpful, and they’re located right there on the Bay. My daughter and a friend set out to SUP. I accompanied them on a kayak, and we had an amazing adventure together. Thinking about moving to Marin? With a little help, it’s very easy to get your feet wet.
